Kids Class (Ages 5-9)*

Our kids’ programs are specifically going to be tailored to around two core fundamentals. Fun and Structure. Coach Anthony’s sons specifically have over 20 years of training between them, and the most important thing is they still enjoy coming to class. Simply put, no matter the quality of training provided by any school or program is almost irrelevant if your child does not want to be there. There is a large amount of young people who get into BJJ, they start to develop an interest, they attend every class, begin to competitions and within a year, they burn out and move on to the next support and activity. At BJJ Squared we believe that BJJ is best viewed as almost a lifestyle, and while it can be your child’s “sport” it is at its best when it is used as a building block to make a well-rounded, disciplined young adult.

The kids program geared towards children 5 to 9 years old is meant to teach kids about the positions in jiu jitsu, work on a basic move set, and build confidence towards being more comfortable in uncomfortable situations. As a school, our number one priority is to keep your child interested in Jiu Jitsu. Classes are meant to be structured, teaching the technique, training the technique, and wrapping up with something fun.

Youth Class

(Ages 9-14)*

Our youth program is a balance of our adult fundamental Jiu jitsu program, with some certain adjustments. This age group generally picks up techniques faster than any other group so we try to provide them with a strong focus on the basics while still engaging them in new challenges. In these classes we spend about 5 minutes on a warmup, 25 minutes teaching and training, and about 10 minutes doing live training.  While we will never lose our core value of making things fun, we make a conscious effort to instill some discipline.  At this age group, the student is expected to be able to stay on the mat for the entire class, and we will work to they are locked in and focused on what is being asked of them on the mat.  Once they reach a certain age or size, they will have an easy time transitioning to our adult program.

Including Coach Anthony, our 5 current Kid/Youth instructors have over 35 years combined Jiu Jitsu experience and are excited to share their knowledge and love of Jiu Jitsu with you and your family.

*Placements between the two classes may vary based on size and maturity level, if there are any questions regarding which class to attend for a free trial week, please contact Coach Tyler

Adult Classes

Fundamentals

At BJJ Squared, we believe that a strong understanding of fundamental techniques is the key to progression and enjoyment in your Jiu Jitsu journey. Our curriculum for fundamentals class will cover basic techniques from every position, providing you will a well-rounded knowledge base that will support your journey from white to black belt. These classes consist of 5-10 minutes of a Jiu-Jitsu-based warm-up, 2-3 techniques, and situational sparring directed towards the lesson of the day. This structure allows students to ‘go live’ from day 1 without feeling too lost.

Tradewinds Tuesday

We are lucky to be a part of the Tradewinds Network under Patrick McElderry. Our closest “sister school” is Riverfront BJJ in Wilmington, DE. On Tuesday nights, we are lucky to have coaches from Riverfront come and share techniques with us. This class is slightly longer than our fundamentals classes, but still appropriate for all levels.

Grappling

During grappling, or open mats we set a timer and get to put our skills to the test. In BJJ, the ‘tap’ keeps us safe and allows us to practice resistance in real-time. We recommend students spend ~3 months in line drills before trying out grappling.

Mobility

Movement is essential to be effective in Jiu-Jitsu. Come and work on your flexibility and movement through dynamic and static stretching geared towards BJJ.

NoGi

NoGi grappling follows the same principles of training in a Gi without the addition of a uniform to grab a hold of. As such, NoGi grappling tends to be faster paced and typically comes easily to those with previous wrestling experience. While there is no uniform required for NoGi, for safety reasons we prohibit excessively baggy clothing and shorts or pants with pockets.
